I want to thank the several people who have kept me abreast of the discussions over at the JREF regarding being banned. Allow me to clarify a few things.

There seems to be some confusion regarding whether I requested that my account be deleted, unregistered or whatever. Here is the exact message in its entirety that I sent to Darat and Lisa a few months ago:

"Please inactivate/unregister (or whatever you call it) my account so that I have a status of Guest without posting privileges. "

Within hours of this request I found that I did, in fact, have a status of Guest under my name and did not have posting privileges. I was still able to log in and use a limited subset of the forum features. Nobody ever told me that I would no longer be allowed to log in. It is quite clear that I was operating under the assumption that I would still be allowed to, and for two months that was the case.

The issue here is that Darat changed my password without telling me. I reset it and logged in. Darat changed it again without telling and also changed my e-mail address so I could not reset my password (again, without telling me). Jeff Wagg is 100% wrong that there is no Guest status. If he were right, then why would they even need to alter my account? Use your brain, Jeff.

Need more proof? Log out of the forums. Read any post. Do you see the icon to report posts? No, you don't. So, how was I able to report posts if I were not logged in? Remember, Darat told me the reason he altered my account was because he didn't want to see reports from non-members. Clearly, I had a status that is higher than being logged out and lower than being a full member, which is exactly what I requested.

As for my "conspiracy theory" take a look at what happened. Lisa Simpson said flat out that the admins did not make any changes to my account. She was either mistaken or lying. I did not suggest that anyone at the JREF was up to shenanigans until after Lisa made her denial and Darat led me to believe that he had reset my account to the proper e-mail address. I don't think Darat was being deliberately misleading - he's just a terrible communicator. But the fact is he did not come right out and say that he was the responsible for all of the changes to my account and that he was doing so because he did not want me to log in anymore.

It was at this point that I involved Jeff Wagg. He said that nobody at the JREF was playing games with my account. Either he was mistaken, lying, or being misleading because Darat on two occasions altered my account settings without telling me. How is that not playing games?

Jeff, the Outreach and Communications Director, then threw a temper tantrum instead of trying to clear up the misunderstanding. Rather than take a deep breath and read what I wrote, he reponsed with insults ("no whining") and laid down an ultimatum after I had just requested that my account be reinstated.

So, Jeff, why did you want to force me to repeat something I had already told you? You get paid money to establish good relations on behalf of the JREF, but it seems you'd rather push people into pissing matches. I had answered your question already, but no, you felt the need to force me to repeat my request so that you could be the "winner" in this little skirmish. And because I wouldn't kiss your ass and repeat myself in the manner you desired, you lashed out by permanently banning me from the forums.

I was already locked out of the system, so why the permanent ban? Why not just let things settle down for a while? Do you really think you, Darat and Lisa handled this situation perfectly? If so, then you've a lot to learn about communication.

As a follow-up, if they don't want to allow people to suspend posting privileges and retain access to other features such as reporting posts, that's their choice. It's their sandbox, so they make the rules.

* It is my understanding they could set up the software that way using security levels. Had they done so, I wouldn't be banned.

* If for some reason they needed to change the password and e-mail to enforce this policy, they should have done that from day one. Had they done so, I wouldn't be banned.

* I had reported several posts in the intervening two months. Had somebody simply e-mailed me and said, "Please do not report any more posts" then I would not have and would not be banned.

* Had Darat e-mailed me before changing my password the first time, I would not be banned.

* Had Darat, after seeing me reset my password, had e-mailed me to tell me what he was doing, I would not be banned.

* Had Lisa told me that Darat had made the changes and why, I would not be banned.

* Had Jeff told me that Darat had made the changes and why, I would not be banned.

* Had Jeff read my response where I requested reinstatement of my account instead of forcing me to ask a second time, I would not be banned.

* And, of course, had I chosen to let Jeff win that final pissing match, I would not be banned.

I guess this is what happens when you're not one of the Cool Kidz.

... You expect them to be aware of glitches? (Also, while I agree the tone might be a bit annoying, you *were* set to unregistered.)

Rika, where did you get the idea that there was a glitch? I don't think you understand how vBulletin, the forum software, works.

It works like pretty much all other forum software. Access to forums and features is granted by roles. Starting at the top you have:

Admins - Can see and do everything.

Moderators - Can see all the forums and use the moderation features. They do not have access to Administrator features.

Members - Can see and post in all of the forums except those restricted to just mods and admins.

New Members - Same as the above except they cannot post a link until after 15 posts. At that point they automatically upgrade to Member.

Unverified Members - This is what you are after you confirm your account via e-mail but before an administrator upgrades you to new member. You can see all of the forums except Forum Management. You cannot post. You *can* report posts and use the Ignore feature.

Visitors - These are the people who are not logged on. They cannot see the members only forums. They cannot report posts or use the ignore feature.

Banned/Suspended Users - Some form of the above.

They can also make other roles. They cannot delete people from the system without messing up the messaging system. When they say they "unregistered" me, they mean they set my account to some other role. In that role I could not see the members only areas and could not post. However, I could report posts and use the ignore feature. Thus I had a role somewhere between visitors (people who are not logged in) and Unverified Members.

Had they wanted to, they could have simply changed my password and e-mail from the start. There would be no need to change my role because the account would not be accessible. That's not a glitch. Perhaps it is human error.

As for whether they should have been aware of it, I reported four or five posts while I was at this Guest access level. It was not a secret. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong. It was only after the last report and my blog that they decided they did not want me to report any more posts.

Darat realized that the vBulletin software does not allow them to disable reporting of posts (I checked the manual). At this point he changed my password without telling me. He forgot, of course, that I could use the password reset feature to get a new password. Seeing that I logged in again, he then changed my password and my e-mail so I couldn't reset the password. Again, without telling me.

So you see, Rika, there was no glitch that got fixed.
